About Us

About Us

My name is Ipul, a native of Bukit Lawang, and the jungle holds no secrets for me. With extensive experience as a guide for two major trekking companies, I founded Orangutan Adventure, a family business, in 2019.

However, the arrival of COVID disrupted my plans. The pandemic depleted all my savings, forcing me to temporarily abandon my dream.

In 2023, I had a decisive encounter with two French travelers on a six-month road trip in Asia. Inspired by my story, my passion for nature, and my zest for life, they decided to help me realize my dream. In May 2023, I welcomed my first travelers with emotion.

Today, we pour our hearts and souls into this venture. Our mission goes beyond tourism: we offer unique eco-responsible stays, with an ecolodge in perfect harmony with nature, while actively contributing to the protection of wildlife and flora.

Each stay is designed to respect and preserve this precious environment, while allowing you to have an unforgettable experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are we sure to see any Orang Outans ?

There are two types of orangutans in Bukit Lawang: wild and semi-wild. Semi-wild orangutans are easier to spot, but they still live in their natural habitat. So, there’s a good chance to see them, though it can’t be guaranteed 100%.

Getting to Bukit Lawang is easy once you’ve made it to Sumatra.
The village is in North Sumatra, about 3 to 5 hours by road from Medan and Kualanamu airport, depending on traffic. The most convenient international airports to fly into are Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, or Jakarta. From there, it’s just a short one-hour flight to Kualanamu airport — we recommend Air Asia for great prices!

Once you land, you have three options to reach Bukit Lawang, depending on your budget, schedule, and preferred comfort level:
– A private car,
– A tourist bus,
– Or a local public bus.

If you’re traveling around Sumatra, you can also head to Bukit Lawang from places like Berastagi or Lake Toba by tourist minibus (shared car).

You need to be in good physical condition, but there’s no need to be an athlete. We offer different paths with varying difficulty levels, and our guides will adapt to the group. It’s not a competition—there will be as many breaks as needed, and plenty of time to observe the wildlife.

1. Trekking gear

  • Lightweight T-shirt, long pants, and long socks (dark colors recommended to protect against leeches). Short pants are okay if worn with long socks.

  • Pants, long-sleeved shirts, or a T-shirt with a sweater for cooler evenings and nights.

  • Comfortable hiking shoes plus river-crossing shoes (or flip-flops/sandals if camping).

  • Spare clothes for each day (they won’t dry overnight). Bring plastic bags to separate wet and dry clothes.

  • Swimsuit and towel for washing in the river.

  • Waterproof jacket for rain.

  • Small backpack (30-35 liters) for daily essentials; main luggage stays safe at camp.

  • Hat or cap, sunglasses.

  • Sunscreen and mosquito repellent.

  • Camera, phone, flashlight, and power bank.

  • Toilet paper.

  • Large water bottle (1.5 liters or more).

2. Eco-friendly tips

  • Bring solid soap and shampoo to reduce waste.

  • Smokers should bring a pocket ashtray and never leave cigarette butts in the jungle.

Important info

  • Jungle camps are basic: small mattress, blanket, mosquito net. Some camps have Western-style toilets, others require going into the jungle. Washing is done in the river.

  • Orangutan Adventure is not responsible for injuries or damage during the trek due to the unpredictable nature of the jungle.

  • Seeing orangutans or other wildlife is not guaranteed, but we will do our best to help you spot them.

Yes, children are welcome and they love the jungle! We often host families with kids as young as 3 years old. The most suitable treks are the 1-day or 2-day/1-night options.
